Client: Manchester UNESCO City of Literature

Website: Manchester City of Literature

Manchester was welcomed into UNESCO’s worldwide Creative Cities network as a City of Literature in 2017 following a successful bid coordinated by a consortium involving Manchester City Council, the universities, Manchester Literature Festival plus a range of the city’s writers, publishers and literary organisations.

Manchester City of Literature celebrates, promotes and supports the city’s diverse, dynamic and inspirational written and spoken word community, encouraging everyone to enjoy literature in all its forms.

In 2020 Instruct developed the Manchester City of Literature brand to help promote both the organisation and city across a variety of platforms and communications. Along with an updated identity, a flexible brand system was created to enable the core brand to work with partner events and projects, such as International Mother Language Day and Festival of Libraries.

The brand grid ensures the Manchester City of Literature identity always frames the content and ensures consistency, even when working with distinctive campaigns.

A new website was also developed to be a central hub for literary events, resources, projects and news. It provides an online meeting place for both Manchester residents and to the rest of the world promoting Manchester creativity far and wide.
